In Memory of Delmy
In December 2018, we lost a brilliant beautiful light. Delmy was a woman who fought for her freedom and gave all her love to her son. Delmy was the inspiration for my mural in Harrisburg. She was kind, generous, and pushed through so many obstacles to lift up her son. Such a vibrant life taken away so soon. I am honored to have met her, share space with her, laugh, and be in the presence of an amazing warrior who at the very end, always fought for what was right.
In December 2019, a year after her passing, I hosted the “Las Madres de Berks” screening at Philly Cam and opened the space in her honor. Four of the fourteen families that were formerly detained at the Berks family prison were present to see the film and to remember their friend. This was the first time the families had seen each other since they were released from the prison. We ended the event by holding space to remember Delmy and to collectively show support to her 10 year old son. Creating spaces for healing is so important, and I am honored to stand alongside the families as we grieve and share light and hope with one another. - Michelle Angela Ortiz
